Students in Candice Hudson’s English as a New Language class at Northwood decorated their classroom with books and beautiful lanterns from home in preparation for Ramadan. The Muslim students and their families fast from sunrise to sunset during this holy time, which begins the evening of Sunday, Mar. 10 and goes until Tuesday, Apr. 9. The class also read the book Lailah’s Lunchbox: A Ramadan Story by Reem Faruqi. The story is about a girl who moves to a new country and worries that her classmates won’t understand why she doesn’t join them in the lunchroom.

About Rene: "Rene is loved by all who know her. She is always happy and cheerful and gives everyone a smile. She remembers everyone and makes them feel special. Students she doesn't even work with will come down to her room for morning hellos. She makes all the students and staff around her feel welcome and comfortable to be who they are. She has a way of forming relationships with students who may be difficult to forge connections with. She never passes judgement and always tries to empathize with others. She is a gem!" Thank you for all you do, Rene!

High School students had a friendly competition of rock, paper, scissors last Friday during lunch. Participants each received a penny during round one. The winners of that round got the other person’s penny and so on. The person who ended up with the most pennies (and therefore won the most rounds) was the winner! Winners received candy and Cadet swag as prizes. Principal Dr. Jeff Green led the game, along with a karaoke competition earlier this year, as a way to make lunchtime fun and welcoming for students.
