Serving on the Board of Education

The New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) and the Monroe County School Boards Association (MCSBA) provide information, training, advocacy and guidance on matters affecting school boards, and collaborates with other educational and related organizations to promote excellence in education for public school students. NYSSBA and MCSBA offer a variety of publications that provide valuable information to assist in your role as a school board member.

Qualifications To Run For Board Of Education

  • Able to read and write

  • Qualified voter of the District – citizen of the United States and at least 18 years of age

  • Must have been a resident of the District for at least one year prior to the election

  • Not an employee of the District

  • No other member of the family is on the School Board

  • Not a convicted felon

To Become A Candidate For The Board Of Education

Submit a petition to the District Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 22, 2024 with at least 45 qualified district voter signatures. NYS Education Department requires the petition be signed by at least 25 qualified district voter signatures or two percent of the number of voters who voted in the previous annual election (2,244 voters in 2023), whichever is greater. Blank petitions will be available from the district clerk after the March 12, 2024 Board meeting. This is after the approval of the legal notice for the annual budget presentation and school district meeting and election (typically after the first Board meeting in March).
