What's the difference between Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) courses?

Standard Level Courses must have 150 hours of instruction.  They may be run over one or two school years. SL courses that are one year long: IB French, IB Spanish,IB Biology, IB Math Applications, IB Psychology, and IB Math Analysis (Calc).

Higher Level courses must have 240 hours of instruction.  They must be run over two years. They also have additional assessment pieces compared with the SL courses.  IB Literature, IB Language & Literature, IB Film, IB Theater, and IB History of the Americas are only offered at Higher Level.

IB Chemistry and IB Visual Arts are classes that are two years long (11th and 12th grade).  Students may choose what level they wish to test (HL or SL) at the beginning of their senior year.

Theory of Knowledge does not have SL or HL designation.  It is a requirement for IB Diploma candidates and an elective for any other student interested in the course.
