Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS)

CAS is a core requirement for the IB Diploma Program.  While all students are encouraged to engage in personal development, CAS is not a requirement for those taking IB classes, but is for students taking the full IB Diploma.

The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the program and takes seriously the importance of life outside of the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies.

  • Creativity is interpreted broadly to include a wide range of arts activities as well as the creativity students demonstrate in designing and implementing service projects.

  • Activity can include not only participation in individual and team sports but also taking part in expeditions and in local or international projects.

  • Service encompasses a host of community and social service activities.  Some examples include helping children with special needs, visiting hospitals and working with the elderly.

Students are expected to have around 150 hours of CAS over the course of the two years of the diploma program.  They will reflect upon their activities to further understand their value.

Some Sample CAS activities of students this year:

  • Coaching Hilton Heat Girl's Soccer

  • Volunteering at an animal shelter

  • Participating on the school tennis team

  • Participating on school Drumline

  • Volunteering to help students at Northwood Elementary

  • Helping at Open House

  • Volunteering at Kids' Night Out
