The Hilton School District Jazz Department and Hilton Music Boosters present the 20th Annual Hilton Evening of Jazz on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Hilton High School auditorium. This year’s Evening of Jazz features Chris Minh Doky’s awe-inspiring All Stars – Bill Evans, Dennis Chambers, George Whitty, and David Gilmore.
Every member of this band has collaborated for many years with Chris Minh Doky, both as members of his bands, world tours, recordings, and Bill Evans’s Soul Bop Band. Chris Minh Doky All Stars’ concert is an opportunity to hear great music from the legendary bands they each have been part of.
Electric and acoustic bass guitarist, Doky first performed as a young musician in Denmark, but, still in his teens, moved to New York where famed jazz guitarist Mike Stern added him to his band. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark knighted Doky in 2010 for his contributions to the arts, and he has earned four Grammy® nominations.
Bill Evans is a world class saxophonist and producer who made his debut on the international music scene in the 1980s with Miles Davis. This led to touring and recording with John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, and Mick Jagger to name but a few.
Dennis Chambers is an American drummer who has recorded and performed with John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic, John McLaughlin, Niacin, Mike Stern, CAB, Greg Howe, and many others.
George Whitty, Grammy-award winning keyboardist, has spent decades playing on the road. His resume as a session musician includes some of the best-selling records of all time: Santana’s “Supernatural” (with Dave Matthews), Celine Dion’s “Falling Into You” and “These are Special Times,” and more than 100 other CDs.
David Gilmore, born in Boston, studied piano, drums and percussion, taking up guitar studies at 15 with John Baboian and Randy Roos and then at New York University with sax titan Joe Lovano and pianist Jim McNeely. In addition to recording and touring, Gilmore teaches Guitar Studies at Berklee College of Music and conducts master classes around the world.
Tickets are $25 and include performances by the Merton Williams Middle School and Hilton High School Jazz Ensembles. The event is a Hilton Music Boosters fundraiser helping to defray the cost of student music group trips. To purchase tickets, visit www.showtix4u.com or contact Jared Streiff at 392-1000, ext. 2293.
