Agency

We honor CHOICE, VOICE, and OWNERSHIP over student learning.

How do we promote STUDENT AGENCY at QUEST?

  • Students lead morning meetings

  • Students lead 3-Way Conferences and Portfolio Shares

  • Teachers differentiate so students can work at their level or by interest

  • We help students put their ideas into ACTION

  • We ask students how they can best show their learning

  • We honor student ideas for school-wide events, clubs, changes that could be made to make our school better, and give kids platforms to make change

  • We value a culture of mistakes and struggle in order to grow

  • We teach through inquiry

From the IBO:

When teachers support student agency, they:

  • notice, and reflect on the students’ existing capabilities, needs and interests in order to personalize learning

  • actively listen to students’ opinions, wonderings, perspectives and aspirations to extend student thinking and action

  • foster authenticity for students to explore their interests by giving them open-ended tasks

  • offer opportunities for students to demonstrate creativity and take risks

  • reflect on when students need help, and when not, by using assessment evidence to inform learning and teaching

  • listen a respond to each student's activities to extend their thinking.
