Rules of Conduct

As a Board of Education:

  1. We consider all questions that arise on a basis of what is best for the youth in our District.

  2. We attend meetings of the Board and assigned committees as a Board Representatives.

  3. We understand that we have no power or authority as individual members; that only the Board as a whole can make policies and decisions for the school district.

  4. The Board and Administrative Team are respectful to one another and the audience at all times.

  5. The Board has one official spokesperson, the President. Media relations are the job of the President and the Superintendent.

  6. The Board and Administrative Team will operate under the rule of “No Surprises.”

  7. Board of Education ground rules will be reviewed and revised as necessary, at least annually.

  8. Board members will take no private action that would compromise the Board of administration and will respect the confidentiality of privileged information.

Standard Operating Procedures

  1. Meetings begin typically at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. The executive sessions will typically be held prior to the public sessions.
  2. Every effort is made to conclude meetings (including executive session) by 10 p.m.
  3. The Board Officers and Superintendent create the meeting agendas. Any Board member may add agenda items with the consent of the majority during a meeting. The Board will utilize a consent agenda. The agenda format will be reviewed annually.
  4. There will be presentations on educational initiatives, program and school activities at most meetings.
  5. Requests for information items requiring substantial staff background work must be approved by a majority of the Board in open session.
  6. Action items requiring time for review and public input will be tabled for at least one meeting. Some items in this category are textbook approvals, policy revisions, and curriculum approvals.
  7. All requests for information on the operations and policies of the District go through the Superintendent, Director of Business Operations, the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources or the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. Exceptions to this shall be by the majority of the Board.
  8. It is the responsibility of each committee member to report to the Board discussions and actions that take place at committee meetings and to report to the committees’ board discussions regarding the committee.
